<a href="http://www.cousinsinclay.com/" target="_blank">"Cousins in Clay"</a> at Bulldog Pottery Seagrove, NC<br />
<div>
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
Dan Anderson taught for 32 years at Southern Illinois University Edwardsville and retired from teaching in 2002 to become a full-time studio potter. Anderson’s pots combine his love of architectural shapes and his fascination for decal illustrations with his sparky sense of humor. He finds his ceramics a joy to make and when he is finished with the final decal firing... he admits, there is nothing like them in the whole wide world.<br />
<br />
We are excited to meet Dan and spend the weekend with him and his pots. Brian Jones interviewed Dan Anderson last year on the "Jonescast" podcast. Listening to the <a href="http://www.brianrjones.com/2013/07/ep-35-dan-anderson/" target="_blank">Dan Anderson interview</a> on the Jonescast is a fun way to get to know Dan. While you are there check out some of the other interviews as well. </div>
<span style="text-align: left;"><br /></span>
<span style="text-align: left;">Dan will demonstrate on Sunday, June 1, 1:30 – 2:30pm and talk about his experiences as a potter and teacher.</span></div>

<b>David MacDonald</b> will be one of our guest clay cousins for this years "Cousins in Clay" at Bulldog Pottery in Seagrove, NC. He is an emeritus professor of Syracuse University and makes pottery and lives in Syracuse, New York. MacDonald received the Excellence in Teaching Award from the National Council on Education for the Ceramic Arts (NCECA) in 2011.<br />
<br />
An excerpt from David MacDonald's artist statement.<br />
<br />
<i>"The nature of the art experience for me is one of self-discovery and communication. In one sense, it is a very private and personal journey in search of order, reason, reality and beauty. In another sense, it is a very public act in the attempt to express and share, with others, my realizations and discoveries."</i><br />
<br />
<br />
He recently had a solo exhibition at the Everson Museum of Art in Syracuse, New York.<br />
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><span style="font-size: large;">"</span>For more than four decades, David MacDonald has masterfully created richly patterned utilitarian objects from clay that have come to symbolize tremendous integrity and endurance. Despite the national recognition MacDonald has earned for his superb work, he remains committed to, and most content when he is producing, functional works of art in beautiful forms that will be touched, held, and most importantly used by people who will admire and appreciate their inherent beauty.<span style="font-size: large;">"</span></span><br />

<br />
<div style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS'; font-size: 16px; text-align: left;">
I have picked up, moved, shaped,</div>
<div style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS'; font-size: 16px; text-align: left;">
and lightened myself of many tons of clay,</div>
<div style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS'; font-size: 16px; text-align: left;">
and those tons lifted, moved, and shaped me,</div>
<div style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS'; font-size: 16px; text-align: left;">
delivering me to this living-space</div>
<div style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS'; font-size: 16px; text-align: left;">
I wake and move about in,</div>
<div style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS'; font-size: 16px; text-align: left;">
space perhaps equal to that I have opened and enclosed</div>
<div style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS'; font-size: 16px; text-align: left;">
in plate, cup, bowl, jug, jar.</div>
<div style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS'; font-size: 16px; text-align: left;">
I am thankful no one ever</div>
<div style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS'; font-size: 16px; text-align: left;">
led me to the pit I'd help to make in Earth,</div>
<div style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS'; font-size: 16px; text-align: left;">
or showed me all the clay at once.</div>
<div style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS'; font-size: 16px; text-align: left;">
I'm grateful no one ever said, There.</div>

And oh, yes, here's a drum of ink.</div>

<div style="font-family: Verdana; font-size: 13px;">
David MacDonald is a recently retired ceramics professor from Syracuse University, New York and will be our honored guest Cousin for the "Cousins in Clay" pottery event in Seagrove, North Carolina. </div>
<div style="font-family: Verdana; font-size: 13px;">
<br /></div>
<div style="font-family: Verdana; font-size: 13px;">
Excerpt on Syracuse.com Media</div>
<div style="font-family: Verdana; font-size: 13px;">
"He believes inspiration occurs on a subconscious level. He says many of the patterns on his pieces are an amalgamation from different sources, but he strives for something special with each one.</div>
<div style="font-family: Verdana; font-size: 13px;">
“I just kind of want my work to look Africanesque, but I try to avoid copying African patterns verbatim.”</div>
<div style="font-family: Verdana; font-size: 13px;">
His intention is to “capture the essence of them, the structure the patterns are built around. Usually, it’s a grid,” he says. “Sometimes I take a pattern, then reinterpret it.”</div>
<div style="font-family: Verdana; font-size: 13px;">
Reinterpretation and repetition don’t end there. “An idea will start somewhere, and eventually it will mutate in the process of doing it over and over again."</div>

The 4th Annual "Cousins in Clay" in Seagrove, North Carolina will be held on May 26 and 27, 2012 at Bulldog Pottery. Bruce and Samantha are very pleased to announce their honored guest Clay Cousin Ron Meyers.<br />
<br />
Ron Meyers is a retired ceramics proffessor and studio potter living in Athens, Georgia. He was one of Bruce Gholson's instructors at UGA . (Bruce received his undergraduate degree from the University of Georgia in 1978.) Ron Meyers shows his work all over the country and is a workshop favorite throughout the states. I read an article about him on <a href="http://www.criticalceramics.org/oldsite/reviews/shows/meyers.shtml">Critical Ceramics</a> by Barbara Kirk about his show at the AKAR gallery in Iowa City, Iowa. She mentions that an early passion of his was to be a professional cartoonists. I found this to be very interesting because I can imagine stories behind his drawings. His animals have strong personalities, and I can continue to wonder what are they up to next after posing for their portrait with Ron.<br />
<br />
Ron Meyers will be here at Bulldog Pottery on May 26 & 27, 2012 for <a href="http://www.cousinsinclay.com/">"Cousins in Clay"</a>. You will be able to meet him and collect a piece of his pottery.<br />
<br />
We will introduce our other honored Cousin in Clay guest soon.<br />

<br />Some of the pots unloaded today from the wood kiln. Some of these might just be for sale at this weekend's show in Bakersville, NC. Don't hesitate. <br />
<br />I'm not sure how it will translate itself onto my pots, but I'm sure something interesting will emerge. The colors remind me of Iznik pottery. Patterns, too. Maybe I will paint some of my porcelain dishes with some similar colors and slip them into the wood kiln this weekend.
<br />
<br />You can find out what happens if you come out next week for the "Mountain" Cousins in Clay here at my place in Bakersville. Go to our <a href="http://www.cousinsinclay.com/MountCousinsHome.htm"target="_blank">Cousins in Clay web site</a> for details and directions.
<br />
<br />Wish me luck.
